Project Overview:
Manual vitiligo assessments often result in inconsistent scoring, subjective evaluations, and time-intensive workflows. Hamzavi Dermatology, a leader in skin health research, saw these gaps as barriers to delivering consistent care at scale.
To address this, Hamzavi partnered with Folio3 Digital Health to reconceive its vitiligo assessment workflow. We developed an AI-driven imaging platform that automated I-VASI score computation using fingertip units (FTU) through custom algorithms. It also achieved mm²-level accuracy and enabled asynchronous, remote evaluations. With black dot calibration, visual annotations, and a HIPAA-compliant dashboard, the solution bridged the gap between clinical accuracy and digital scalability.
Challenges in Standardization for VASI Score Calculation in Vitiligo Skin Assessments
Tracking the early signs of vitiligo and measuring depigmentation remains challenging due to outdated manual processes. Their clinical team relied on manual VASI scoring methods, which became unsustainable as patient volume and data demands grew.
Our solution transforms how clinicians assess and track the vitiligo skin condition. Below are the core features that power accurate, standardized, and real-time VASI score vitiligo evaluations.
Smart Segmentation of Depigmented Skin
The system segments vitiligo skin patches using K-Means clustering and pixel-level analysis. It accurately highlights the affected regions, even in the early signs of vitiligo, improving detection across different skin tones.
Pixel-to-Meter Calibration via Black Dot Marker
It reads the black dot sticker on the vitiligo skin image to calculate the pixel-to-meter ratio. This standardization supports consistent VASI score calculation across varying camera angles and lighting conditions.
FTU-Based VASI Score Calculator
The platform uses finger tip units (FTUs) as a consistent scale to interpret affected skin surface area. This approach helps dermatologists apply a uniform method for VASI score in vitiligo assessments.
mm²-Precision Surface Area Output
It calculates the surface area in mm² for each body zone, using dermatology-approved methods. This output provides a clear VASI score calculation example for objective tracking.
Real-Time I-VASI Score Computation
The system instantly computes the I-VASI score and presents the VASI score interpretation results visually. It supports both in-clinic use and virtual assessments.
Visual Annotations and Score Overlays
The platform overlays each VASI score on the segmented image of the vitiligo-affected skin. This makes the VASI score calculator output clear and easy to review for clinicians and researchers.
HIPAA-Compliant Image Upload and Dashboard
Clinicians can upload images securely and receive immediate results. The dashboard ensures data privacy, supports file downloads, and simplifies follow-ups for vitiligo skin treatment monitoring.
Reduced Evaluation Time Automated calculations eliminated manual VASI estimation, allowing clinicians to process more cases faster and speed up the process by 55%.
Standardized I-VASI Scoring Across Clinics By using FTU as the unit of measurement, clinicians aligned around a common VASI score interpretation method.
Enhanced Diagnostic Accuracy Pixel-to-meter ratio calibration using black dots ensured consistent mm²-level area outputs.
Enabled Remote Dermatology Workflows Clinicians accessed a fully virtual assessment tool, ideal for teledermatology platforms and asynchronous evaluations.
Data-Driven Treatment Monitoring Tracked vitiligo skin progression over time using repeatable VASI score calculation examples across patient visits.
